Mardi Gras parades will not roll in the city of Covington.
The city becomes the first in St. Tammany to cancel all Mardi Gras parades for the 2021 Mardi Gras season.
Covington’s Mayor Mark Johnson says the current social distancing requirements make it impossible to for parades to roll. The mayor did offer an alternative date in late spring or on July 4th but krewes declined.
“I remain open to rescheduling,” Johnson said. “We, the city, cannot have a reasonable expectation of meeting those guidelines.”
This comes as one of New Orleans’ largest Carnival krewes, Endymion announced it will not roll or host any Carnival Balls this Mardi Gras season.
