Covington mayor urges drivers to use "Non Verbal Communication Device"

Covington Mayor Mark Johnson is apparently fed up with people not using their turn signals and driving slow in the left lane. He has sent out an email trying to educate drivers.

"In automobiles, located on the left-hand side of the steering column, is a lever. When pushed downward, this lever activates exterior lights on the left side of the car that 'blink.'," Johnson wrote. "These flashing lights tell other drivers, pedestrians and cyclists the driver's intention to turn left or to change into the left lane."

Johnson went on to explain that there is also a procedure to notify others of a driver's intent to turn right.

"Conversely, pushing the lever upward activates the blinking lights on the exterior of the right side of the vehicle. This indicates the driver's intention to turn right or to change into the right lane."

He says that "this innovation" is a wonderful way to non-verbally communicate with other drivers.

"It does not require an app," the mayor noted. "Kudos to those drivers who are aware of this feature and use it."

Johnson also had a message for drivers who stay in the left lane even when other motorists are travelling faster.

"'Slow Traffic Keep Right' does not mean cars traveling the speed limit should remain in the left lane if in fact they are still the slower traffic. I'm talking to you random causeway driver."
