D.A.-elect Williams: Prosecution should focus on violence, fairness

New Orleans City Councilman Jason Williams, soon to be District Attorney Jason Williams, today said he is honored the voters have chosen his vision for the future of the prosecutor's office

"I am overwhelmingly and forever grateful for the trust that the people of this community have put in me to take us into a new era," Williams said today.

The frequent critic of District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro said the current D.A. has offered his support in helping Williams transition. Williams defeated former D.A. and criminal court judge Keva Landrum in a runoff election Saturday. Cannizzaro decided not to run for reelection.

Williams today says he has one focus for his office:

"We're going to prioritize violent crime, we're going to insure justice for victims, and we're going to be focused on getting it right."

Hanging over the new D.A. is a federal tax fraud indictment. Williams has said accusations of him not paying hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxes was the result of mistakes made by his former accountant, and said that if it weren't for the COVID-caused slowdown in the courts, the case would be over already.

Williams will be sworn in this January.
