Now that the Louisiana Supreme Court has granted an injunction preventing Mayor LaToya Cantrell's emergency sanitation contract with Henry Consulting from taking effect, what's next in the city's ongoing trash saga?
According to the Chair of the French Quarter Management District, Jane Cooper, the New Orleans City Council will revisit the trash soap opera at an upcoming meeting. Cooper told WWL's Tommy Tucker that the situation remains fluid and that new details could emerge sooner rather than later.
"There's some initial legislation that's going to be heard in early August from the initial termination letter," Cooper said. "There could still be developments today, I suppose, with the city, in terms of any changes."
Lawyers for Mayor Cantrell and the French Quarter business owners who sued the city will return to civil district court for a hearing in another lawsuit surrounding the sanitation situation on August 22. For now, IV Waste will continue providing sanitation services in the French Quarter, Downtown Development District, and Warehouse District.
As the matter plays out in court, Cooper says the FQMD will remain focused on the historic district's needs and will do what it can to keep the Vieux Carré clean. That's why she's pleased her group voted to approve its own contract with IV Waste.
"At the end of the day, with Satchmo Fest coming up, particularly, we have a solid sanitation contract in place," Cooper said.
