After initially declining to seek the office of Mayor of New Orleans, State Senator Royce Duplessis has decided to get in the race.
"Six months ago, I made the very difficult decision not to run for mayor," Duplessis posted. "But after continuing to listen to the people of this city, your frustrations, your disappointments, your confusion, and most of all your lack of faith in the future, it became painfully clear that I have to run."
He will hold an event this week to make it official.
"Join me Tuesday, July 1st in Central City at Ashé Powerhouse at 6:00pm as I formally announce my candidacy for Mayor of New Orleans."
Duplessis wants to "unite and improve" the city.
Qualifying is next week.
Other announced candidates include City Councilwoman Helena Morena, City Councilman Oliver Thomas and former Judge Arthur Hunter.
The primary election is October 11th. If no one gets more than 50% of the vote, the runoff is November 15th.
