Former Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards is back in the hospital to be treated for pneumonia.

He was admitted into Ochsner Medical Center early Wednesday morning, according to his wife, Trina Scott Edwards.

"He has pneumonia in both lungs and will be here several days," said Mrs. Edwards, "but we expect him to get better and be back home soon."

Edwards, 93, was rushed to Our Lady of the Lake hospital last Friday with shortness of breath. He spent the weekend there before hospital doctors discharged him.

Edwards official biographer, Leo Honeycutt, said doctors are treating the former governor with antibiotics and "breathing treatments." He also said Edwards tested negative for COVID-19.

Edwards served four terms as Louisiana governor -- two consecutive terms in the 1970s, then two non-consecutive terms in the 1980s and 1990s.

In 2000, a federal jury convicted Edwards of corrupting the riverboat casino licensing process. He served eight-and-a-half years of a ten year prison sentence.
