Feds vow assistance to NOLA in violent crime fight

The feds say they're launching an "enhanced initiative" to help fight violent crime in New Orleans alongside local and state law enforcement agencies. Additional federal support will be offered to the NOPD and New Orleans DA to crack down on the “worst of the worst” and their “web of criminality”.

“This, ladies and gentlemen, is an all hands on deck moment,” said US Attorney Duane Evans.

When asked if people would be able to notice the surge in resources on the streets, Evans clarified that this help is largely behind the scenes in support roles. NOPD Chief Shaun Ferguson said that’s ok because that’s one area where they could use assistance, emphasizing the need to better utilize the existing surveillance network in the city.

“This is the greatest force multiplier we could ever put together,” said Ferguson.

DA Jason Williams emphasized that the focus will now be not just on violent perpetrators, but people assisting them in their social circles.

“If you know that your son has a high-powered machine gun in your home, if there is a stolen vehicle in your driveway, if you do anything to assist in these criminal activities not only will you be arrested but you will also be prosecuted,” said Williams.
