New Orleans firefighters save surrounding houses after home burns down
Flames tore through a house on Colipissa Street Tuesday near Carrollton and Earhart.

"Crews were dispatched at 1:46 p.m., following 911 calls reporting visible flames and smoke," Operator Gregory Davis said in a news release. "The New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) Fire Operations personnel responded to a two-alarm blaze."
He says it was a vacant property in the 7900 block.
"Seven surrounding exposures were at immediate risk."
Davis says they found heavy fire conditions, with flames threatening nearby homes.
"Due to rapid spread and potential for structural collapse, a second alarm was struck."
He says they then focused on saving the nearby houses.
"Firefighters deployed defensive and exposure protection tactics to prevent the fire from extending to adjacent structures. Thanks to quick work of our crews, none of the exposures sustained major damage, and no injuries were reported."
It took 43 firefighters with 17 vehicles about an hour and a half to get the blaze under control.
"The cause of this fire is under investigation. The New Orleans Fire Department reminds the public to report suspicious activity near abandoned or vacant structures and urges property owners to secure and maintain such buildings to reduce fire hazards."
