New Orleans firefighters were called to Gentilly Sunday night after a home went up in flames.

"The first fire companies arrived on the scene at 7:19 pm to find a one-story brick single family dwelling with heavy fire in the front half of the home and spreading to the attic," NOFD Firefighter Michael Williams said in a news release.

It happened at 2916 Serantine Street.

"Firefighters had to force entry into the home by cutting open burglar bars and chains on the front door.  Fire crews opened the front door and found a 73-year-old female inside who was pronounced deceased by New Orleans Emergency Medical Services."

Williams says neighbors called 911 when they saw fire and heard screams coming from the home.

"No smoke alarms were found in the home. The elderly female lived alone, and family members stated she hadn’t had electricity since hurricane Zeta."

Zeta hit the city in October of 2020, more than two years ago.

"The fire was placed under control at 8:32 pm.  The fire is under investigation."

One firefighter injured his ankle and was transported by EMS to a local hospital.

This was on of five fires in New Orleans within a 24 hour period amid colder weather.
