Gas prices expected to be going up

Gas prices are on the move and not in the direction you want.

"I think a lot of it is going to depend on where you live," says AAA's Don Redman.

"In the impact zone, south shore in particular, you're already seeing some sticker shock," Redman said.

Gas prices have been steady, hovering around the statewide average of $2.90 a gallon for regular unleaded.

"If you go to Plaquemines Parish it's already $3.15 a gallon," said Redman. "Terrebonne is $3.10 a gallon and other areas such as Lafourche or in St. Charles Parish, they are already close to the $3.00 mark as well."

Redman explains why those prices are on the way up: "Almost 30% of our refining capacity was directly affected by Hurricanes Ida and Nicholas. So trying to get everything back on line has been quite a beast."

And with refining capacity still mostly offline and a shortage of shippers bringing in gas, prices which were steady, are expected to start moving upward as soon as today.

But Redman says things are moving to help keep prices from skyrocketing: "Some of the regulations regarding the transfer of fuel has been lifted to try and get the fuel to our state to prevent having $3.50-$4.00 a gallon gas, so that is underway now to bring in gas from other parts of the country."

For the time being: hold on and expect a jump.
