An 80-year-old grandmother fell victim to gun violence after attending a Morris Jeff High School graduation ceremony with her family on Tuesday.

It happened mid-day at the Convocation Center on Xavier University’s campus.

According to news sources, Augustine Greenwood was with her family for her youngest grandson’s graduation. Greenwood leaves behind six children and 15 grandchildren.

Corey Lashley Sr., tells The Times-Picayune that after the ceremony Greenwood and the family were walking to their car in the parking lot on their way to have a family meal to celebrate the big accomplishment when they heard gunshots.

"Instead of celebrating, we wound up sad, crying," he told the news outlet.

The family remembers describe their grandmother as a “sweet, loving person” who loved going to the casino with her family.

Police say the shooting was the result of two women arguing in a parking lot near the center where the graduation took place.

“I am in so much pain right now. Today, I lost my mother to gun violence,” Greenwood's daughter, Geraldine Greenwood-Lashley wrote in a post on social media. “A message to the young ladies that started all of this, “Today you took my world away from me and my family, all you had to do was walk away. It was graduation for my son, my mom was so happy to see her youngest grandchild graduate.”
