A grass fire burning just off I-10 on the Mississippi side of the Pearl River led to authorities shutting the highway down.
Smoke is obscuring the highway as flames lick at trees just off the roadway.
"A grass fire in the median around mile marker 8 has caused I-10 to be temporarily shut down in both directions while crews work to extinguish the fire," according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation. "Motorists traveling east on I-10 will be diverted south onto MS 607, while motorists traveling west on I-10 will be diverted south onto MS 603."
Traffic headed across the state line will have to detour through Picayune, Mississippi, because Hwy. 90 remains closed west of Pearlington.
