Today the organizers of the campaign to recall New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell are going to court today for a hearing on their case against the registrar of voters.
Laura Cannizzaro is one of the lawyers for NoLaToya.org. She says when the recall campaign started mailing its material to voters, they began getting replies that the people they were trying to reach had either moved away, or in some instances, had died.
"When that started happening, the organizers realized something's wrong with the voter roles in Orleans Parish," she said.
Cannizzaro says that is what brought about the suit to change some 30,000 voters categorized as "active" to "inactive."
She says this doesn't remove anyone' registration, but it does make a difference in how many signatures need to be verified for the petitions to be successful.
If the recall campaign is successful in getting tens of thousands of voters classified as "inactive," it makes their mission easier by making so potentially thousands fewer signatures are required to trigger a recall vote.
