Hurricane Ida severely ‘prunes’ historic oak trees at Oak Alley Plantation

Oak Alley Plantation after Hurricane Ida

Hurricane Ida’s destructive 150 mph winds were greater than the mighty oak trees at St. James Parish’s historic Oak Alley Plantation.

The plantation’s 28 oaks that lined the scenic walkway to the storied antebellum-style house were no match for Ida’s winds.

Branches on the oaks snapped off and crashed to the ground. Most of the trees are still standing. Curators to the plantation say the house will be closed so crews can begin the process of cleaning up after the storm.

“The mansion is solid with no damage and the iconic alley of oaks, while they experienced a significant “pruning” during the storm, are stable and standing tall. There is a lot of vegetative debris on the ground which will take some time to remove but we look forward to welcoming visitors back as soon as we are able,” said The Oak Alley Foundation.
