
UPDATE: According to Louisiana State Police, I-55 South has been reopened. Troopers say the 18-wheeler recovery operation has been completed.
ORIGINAL STORY, Sunday, 4:30 p.m.: Interstate 55 South remains closed while crews recover an 18-wheeler that went off the highway and into Lake Maurepas.
The crash happened Friday. According to witnesses who posted in the comments of the original post on the Louisiana State Police Facebook page, the driver appeared to be uninjured.
State Police announced on Saturday that the highway heading into Laplace would be closed on Sunday during the day while crews pull the truck out of the water. Recovery efforts began at 7 a.m. Sunday and were expected to last eight hours. As of 4 p.m. Sunday, crews were still on scene. Troopers said they did not know how much longer the interstate would be closed.
For now, troopers are detouring traffic to Exit 15 and the low road to the Ruddock on-ramp.
