There’s plenty to do and see and hear and experience this 4th of July weekend!

New Orleans fills to capacity tonight as The Essence Festival kicks off a weekend of activities and entertainment.

Hundreds of thousands of people will be circulating between the Morial Convention Center to the Superdome watching numerous singers and entertainers, attending lectures, presentations, shopping, and the like all centered around African-American culture.

Essence is running from Thursday through Sunday. Most events will need reservations and tickets.

Sunday Jefferson Parish will hold its main Fourth of July event starting in the afternoon at LaFreniere Park. Uncle Sam Jam will feature a number of entertainers including: The Total Bettys, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Cowboy Mouth, and a special appearance by Cameron Dupuy and the Cajun Troubadours, a Grammy nominated band from Kenner. The afternoon also will feature a hot eating contest. Admission is free.

On Monday, America’s 256th birthday will be celebrated at 33rd Go 4th on the River from Riverwalk to Crescent Park at the French Market starting at 5:30 in the afternoon. There are events, shopping, food, classes, music and the 9pm fireworks spectacular on the Mississippi River. Once again, Go 4th on the River is free and open to the public.
