Jefferson Parish Schools to offer up to $1,500 to retain teachers in the parish

Jefferson Parish Schools announced they will offer a stipend of up to $1500 for certain teachers to retain them during a time Louisiana continues to be plagued by a teacher shortage.

Administrators with the Jefferson Parish Schools system developed an employee stipend plan aimed at supporting the retention and recruitment of teachers the State Superintendent of Education, Cade Brumley, says there are 2,500 teacher vacancies across Louisiana.

State Superintendent Dr. James Gray says the cash stipend is long overdue, especially for teachers who worked hard during difficult times due to the pandemic.

“I don’t think you can ever pay our employees enough for what they mean to our children, families, and community,” said Superintendent Dr. James Gray. “Employees most certainly deserve more, but this is a sizable investment to show appreciation for what they’ve done and encouragement for what’s ahead.”

The multi-tiered stipend eligibility is based on employment dates and employee status. Payout dates will vary based on an employee category and employment dates.

Stipend amounts are categorized into four categories:

- Teachers & Paraprofessionals: Teachers including certified and noncertified, master teachers, librarians, psychologists, educational diagnosticians/audiologists, speech pathologists, counselors, social workers, ROTC teachers, behavioral interventionists, early intervention specialists, ESL Coaches, nurse/nurse practitioners, OT/PTs.

- School Administrators: Principals, Assistant Principals, Deans, and Director of Cuillier/Connection

- OtherSchool-Basedd Employees: School custodial staff, school child nutrition staff, bus drivers, bus attendants, interpreters, monitors, school clerical

- Other Eligible Employees: Employees who do not meet the definitions above
