Calling it a big misunderstanding Kenner businessman Tulio Murillo, Jr. is facing a pair of charges after subcontractors reported him to the Jefferson Parish District Attorney complaining he’d written bad checks. Murillo, owner of CMC Construction, is accused of a writing a bad check to Grid Iron Construction LLC for more than $25,000. That makes it an offense that carries a possible prison term of up to 20-years.

Murillo by the way is a member of the Kenner Business Association and was named Member of the Year back in 2020.


According to the Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate, the owner of the Grid Iron told the paper Murillo had written several bounced checks for around $150,000.  She claims CMC still owes her company more than $300,000.

Murillo claims his company was is merely dragged into domino effect where he is in fact owed money from another, larger, contractor.

He’s calling for the matter to be handled in civil court and says there’s no need to be elevated to a criminal matter.

J&S Restoration Painting LLC, another contractor, was issued a bum check in the amount of $4,428 in February.  The amount makes it a potential felony with a five-year possible sentence.  J&S co-owner Jose Oliva Umanzor says he was owed more than $13,000 and received a cashier’s check earlier in the week.
