The Louisiana SPCA is urging people who think they see a lost pet in the neighborhood to stop before picking them up and hustling them off to a shelter.

Ann Zorrilla, CEO of the Louisiana SPCA advises people about what to do if they encounter a stray pet:

“If you see an animal out in the community, whether it’s in someone’s yard, in someone’s home, out in the street, don’t assume it doesn’t have an owner.  It’s probably does, it’s probably pretty close to home and that person may be looking for their pet.  So don’t just scoop it up and try to take it somewhere.”

Zorrilla tells WWL-TV the pet may have gotten out during the hurricane and is still shaken up by the storm, but is most likely right near their home.

“However, I’ve seen already on neighborhood association email groups that people are posting animals they’ve been seeing.  And people who have lost their pets are getting reunited.”
