Business owners across Louisiana have reported having problems finding the properly qualified applicants. Many applicants are applying to jobs they seem wildly underqualified for, leading to frustration from both employers and job-seekers. This is coming from all levels: entry-level positions to high-paying specialty jobs. Is it an issue of managing expectations? Is it a problem with basic preparation?
Leah Long is the Louisiana and Mississippi State Director for the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and says the disconnect is hurting both potential employers and those seeking employment. “34% of businesses owners had job openings that they couldn’t fill because they were looking for the properly qualified workers and, unfortunately, the applicants who did apply didn’t have the proper qualifications for it,” she points out.
Long also stresses that those seeking employment should be aware that there are plenty of jobs available, but they need to tailor their resumes toward the specific job they’re seeking, highlighting their relevant experience rather than sending out broad, generic resumes.
She emphasizes the importance of tailoring your career path specifically toward your long-term goals along with talking and networking with those in the industry you’re trying to break into. “If you do have something you want to do, talk to your local community colleges, talk to people in the industry you want to go into. They had a passion and were probably in the same footsteps many years ago,” Long went on to say.
