Man robs police supply store, may have badges and bullet proof vest

New Orleans Police are advising drivers to only stopped for cops in marked cars with full NOPD uniforms on after a burglary at a store selling police gear. If an unmarked car or officer out of uniform tries to stop you, call 911.

"The NOPD has temporarily suspended traffic stops conducted by plain clothes detectives citywide," the department said in a news release. "Only marked units with uniformed officer are authorized to conduct a traffic stop."

Investigators say a man broke into American Police Equipment on Airline Highway over the weekend.

"On January 14, 2024 at approximately 12:38 a.m., the above pictured subject gained entry into A.P.E. The subject was able to cut wires to the video surveillance system and got away with a blue jacket, sweaters, a pair of boots, gloves and flashlights."

Because he disabled the cameras before stealing the gear, NOPD doesn't know if he took a bullet proof vest and police badges.

"The subject may have taken a ballistic vest and some collectible badges. It is unknown at this point as there was no inventory for the items."

The NOPD is asking for the public's assistance in identifying and locating the suspect.

"If anyone has any information on the above subject, please notify Detective Paul Johnson at 504-658-6166, any Third District Detective at 504-658-6030 or Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111."

Crimestoppers President and C.E.O Darlene Costanza has increased the reward from $2,500  to $4,000.
