Former mayor Mitch Landrieu mulls 2028 bid for White House

President Mitch Landrieu? The former New Orleans mayor says he may run during the 2028 campaign.

"I am thinking about it," Landrieu told Politico's "On the Road with Jonathan Martin" podcast. "A lot people have said, 'You should think about,' so it's hard not to. It's an honor for people even to think that would even be possible.

"I would run for President if I thought I was best suited to do it, if I thought I could win, and (if) I thought I could really figure out a way to bring the country together. They're all important. You gotta have them all before you pull the trigger."

Landrieu says he'll make his decision to run in the coming months.

"Some people have decided I'm running (and that) I'm going to do what I'm going to do," Landrieu said. "From my perspective, (my announcement) is going to be sometime after the midterms or the first of the year. I don't think you can wait past then just practically."

One political analyst says Landrieu's chances of winning are slim to none.

"I'm not yet convinced of this candidacy being something that would take off among Democratic voters," JMC Analytics owner John Couvillon said.

Couvillon said he view Landrieu's potential candidacy through the lens of how it would benefit the Democratic Party. According to Couvillon, two factors would work against Landrieu.

The first: Louisiana is not a state that's necessarily on the party's radar.

"Louisiana is not a swing state, nor is it a large state," Couvillon said.

Secondly, Couvillon says, is Landrieu's lack of visibility over the last few years.

"When you're not holding public office, that makes it twice as difficult to try to get your message across as opposed to if you're a sitting governor or a sitting senator or if you had recently served in some official capacity," Couvillon said.

However, Couvillon believes Landrieu could get another job in Washington after the presidential election.

"Perhaps a cabinet post," Couvillon said.
