Entergy is working to restore electricity across Orleans, Jefferson and Plaquemines Parish after a widespread outage Sunday.
Entergy shut off the power across the region to avoid outpacing production. They called it a "load shed."
Officials said turning off the electricity to some prevents everyone losing power.
"Temporary power outages have begun in your area due to a load-shed event. These emergency outages are a last resort, but were initiated by our reliability coordinator, and are necessary to protect the energy grid against longer, more widespread outages."
The utility's outage map shows the power went out shortly before 5:00pm.
Crews hoped to have the electricity back on by 7:00pm. As 8:00pm about 8,500 customers were still without power. The site estimated restoration by 10:30pm.
"An outage has been reported in your area. Additional information will be provided when available. We apologize for this inconvenience."
The National Weather service reported it was 91 degrees at the time the electricity went out, and felt like 105 with the heat index.
