The waters of the Gulf of Mexico claimed three lives, including two children, when a mother and her two daughters all drowned Sunday in Louisiana’s Cameron Parish.
The three deaths were discovered when a 3-year-old boy was found walking alone by campers off Long Beach Road. When the boy was asked where his mother was, he told them she was in the water, leading to a call to police.
The 28-year-old woman and her two daughters, ages 8 and 7, were found dead in the Gulf. Her 9-year-old son however was rescued and is now in stable condition after he was flown to a Lake Charles Hospital, according to comments made by Justice of the Peace Brad Burnett to 12News.
Burnett added that the current theory from authorities is that the mother was caught in a rip current when she went into the water to help her children.
Autopsies have been ordered for all three of the deceased. The identities are currently being withheld by authorities.
Burnett also took the opportunity to warn parents to remain vigilant when bringing their children to any body of water this summer, whether it be the Gulf, a lake, or even just a swimming pool.
