Man convicted of killing ex-girlfriend's father sent to prison for life

A Jefferson Parish judge has ordered a man to spend the rest of his life behind bars after he shot and killed his ex-girlfriend's dad.

"A Jefferson Parish judge on Wednesday (Oct. 21) sentenced Jakobe Odoms to spend the rest of his life in prison plus five years," District Attorney Public Information Officer Paul Purpura said in a news release.

Prosecutors told jurors that 24-year-old Odoms went to Larry Miller’s home in Harvey on June 13, 2022, and knocked on the door.

"When Miller answered, Odoms shot him twice, once in the back and once in the abdomen. Miller, 54, a U.S. Army veteran, did nothing to provoke the attack and died on the living room floor."

Purpura says the jury found Odoms guilty last week of second-degree murder.

He was also convicted of attempted aggravated assault for pointing his pistol at Miller’s mother.

Judge Donnie Rowan sentenced Odoms to the mandatory life sentence in prison without benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence.

"He separately sentenced Odoms to the maximum five years for attempted aggravated assault, for pointing his pistol at Miller’s mother as he fled," Purpura explained.

The sentences run consecutively.
