NASA prepares its final test of the world’s largest and most powerful rocket engines on Saturday.
The Space Launch System or SLS rocket engines were partially built at NASA’s Michoud facility in New Orleans East and will be tested tomorrow at Mississippi’s Stennis Space Center.
Four RS-25 engines will fired up simultaneously on a stationary test pad and generate 1.6 million pounds of thrust.
“It can travel farther and faster than any other rocket and because of its capacity, it can carry things like large aperture telescopes and deep space exploration probes, so it can enable more science sooner,” Jeff Zotti, RS-25 Engine Program Director, Aerojet Rocketdyne tells WWLTV.
“It’s a key milestone for the program, it’s a key milestone for NASA.”
The test is part of NASA’s as part of the Artemis Program to send the next man and woman to the moon in 2024.
The test will be loud. NASA says the rocket engines could be heard up to 60 miles away. The test is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Saturday January 16.
