When the story first broke we were told a woman at a Motel 6 in Bay St. Louis shot and killed two officers and then turned the gun on herself.
Now a new narrative appears to be taking hold and somewhat different than what was initially released.
It began as a welfare check at the Motel 6, where guest Amy Anderson had told the front desk she believed she and her 8-year-old daughter were being followed by a white pickup truck.
When Bay St. Louis officers Sergeant Steven Robin and Officer Brandon Estorffe arrived, they engaged Anderson in a 30-minute conversation.
According to Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell, Anderson made comments that gave the officers concern for the welfare of the child and prompted them to call Child Protective Services.
That’s when Anderson packed her things from the room and headed to her car to leave the hotel with her daughter.
Robin and Estorffe attempted to keep Anderson there at least until CPS could arrive. Robin stationed himself at the door to Anderson’s car and Estorffe was nearby.
Tindell says Anderson, while in her car, with her daughter in the front seat, opened fire on Sgt. Robin, killing him.
She then turned her gun on Estorffe opening fire and hitting him in the arm.
Estorffe drew and fired his gun striking Anderson in the chest.
Anderson fired another shot and hit Estorffe in the head.
Officer Estorffe was treated for his injuries, but later died at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport. Anderson was pronounced dead at the scene.
“This is a very tragic situation,” Commissioner Sean Tindell later told WWL-TV.
“It is my opinion that Officer Estorffe and Sergeant Robin’s concerns for the safety of the minor child were well-founded and based upon the mental state of Mrs. Anderson their heroic actions very well may have saved the lives of others.”
