The first weekend of the new year brought more of the same violent crime that plagued New Orleans through 2020.
After big increases in violence last year, 2021 started with more of the same in the city.
NOPD reports that the first day of the new year saw a man shot while driving on I-10 in New Orleans East.
It happened just after noon on January 1st.
"The victim was driving on the I-10 when the suspects pulled near him and began to shoot. The victim sustained multiple gun shot wounds," according to an initial police report.
Later that afternoon a man was shot in New Orleans East near Hayne Blvd. and Tarpon St.
"The suspects in an unknown sedan approached the victim and began shooting at him. The victim fled the scene, abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot."
Around the same time the first day of the year there was a shooting in Gentilly in the 2500 Block of N Derbigny St.
"Several shots were fired in the area. The victim received a graze wound to the lower back. The victim was treated on the scene by EMS."
Also on January 1st, there was a carjacking in the East.
It happened around 6:45pm in the 6600 Block of Chef Menteur Hwy.
"As the victims were getting in their vehicle, the suspect approached them, pointed a gun at the driver, and demanded them to get out. The suspect took the vehicle and fled the scene in a Grey 2010 Nissan Altima."
January 2nd included a woman robbed of her car in the Fontainbleau neighborhood in the 4500 Block of Walmsley Ave. around 2:00am.
"The victim was exiting her vehicle when an unknown suspect approached her and asked for her keys, the victim threw her keys and ran inside. The suspect got into her vehicle and fled the scene in an unknown direction."
A man was shot the second day of the new year in Treme just after 5:00pm in the 1900 Block of St Ann. St.
"The units responded to a call for service reporting a male shot. Upon their arrival, they found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds to the body. EMS transported the victim to a local hospital where he is listed in critical condition."
That night a woman was shot in the Upper 9th Ward around 10:00pm in the 2000 Block of Louisa St.
"The victim and the suspect were engaged in verbal altercation inside of a vehicle when the suspect struck her in the face. The suspect then exited the vehicle and fired several shots at the vehicle. The victim was shot once in the stomach and was transported to a local hospital."
January 3rd saw an argument turn into a shooting in Gentilly just before 3:00pm in the 2700 block Clover St.
"Two unknown suspects were arguing. Suspects produced guns and started shooting. Victim struck in left upper thigh and left knee and transported to local hospital."
Shortly before 5:00pm on the 3rd a man was shot as suspects fired at one another in Gert Town in the 3100 block Broadway St.
"While victim was walking down street, he observed subjects in two separate vehicles shooting at each other. Victim struck in crossfire and transported to local hospital."
The year's first murder happened just after 5:30pm on January 3rd in New Orleans East in the 7200 block of Morrison Rd. A woman was killed.
"Victim traveling on Morrison Rd. when struck by gunfire, lost control of vehicle and crashed into parked car. Victim pronounced deceased on scene by EMS."
A 76-year-old woman was carjacked on the 3rd in the East in the 7000 block of Martin Dr. just after 6:30pm.
"One suspect approached victim, brandished gun and demanded victim’s keys. Victim complied. Suspects fled in victim's tan 2017 Ford Fusion."
About three hours later, criminals took a man's car at gunpoint in Gentilly in the 1600 block of North Dorgenois St.
"Victim parked in his driveway when suspect approached from rear, brandished gun and demanded victim's keys. Suspect entered victim's 2013 black Toyota Corolla and fled scene."
Just after 10:00pm there was a carjacking in Mid-City in the 400 block N. Carrollton Ave.
"Victim exiting her vehicle when approached by armed suspect who demanded her keys. Victim complied. Suspect fled in victim's 2013 brown Honda CRV."
Sunday night then saw another shooting in New Orleans East in the 12100 block of South I-10 Service Rd. just after 10:00pm
"Witness notified victim of suspect breaking into her car. As victim and witness opened door to exit building, suspect fired two shots, striking victim once to head. Victim transported to local hospital."
Early this morning, there was a carjacking in the East in the 7200 block of Virgilian St.
NOPD says it happened around 6:45am, but did not immediately offer details.
