The New Orleans City Council is considering new rules for short-term rentals like Vrbo and AirBnB.
Previous regulations on short-term rentals were eviscerated when the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeal ruled that it is unconstitutional to limit short-term rental licenses to people with homestead exemptions.
The homestead exemption regulation was meant to stop single owners from buying up multiple properties and turning them into whole-home vacation rentals.
Now the council will considering limits on how many short-term rentals can go in a neighborhood, limiting how many people can occupy a short-term rental, and placing limits on noise and trash where short-term rentals are concerned. The council will also consider requiring the owner or a designated property manager be required to stay on site.
Today's action sets in motion the process of making these proposals law. The next step are hearings before a joint meeting of the quality of life and governmental affairs committees, set for Tuesday, March 14.
