The New Orleans Office of Inspector General has issued a subpoena for records from the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office, WWL-TV reports.
The OIG wants to see records on everything from payroll, attendance, and payments to deputies who worked extra duties for Mardi Gras parade security.
The inspector general had been asking the sheriff's office for these records for weeks, according to the report, but without results.
New Orleans City Councilman Joe Giarrusso, who chairs the budget committee, has concerns that if the IG has to go to court to enforce its subpoena, the city may end up stuck with the bill.
"I don't think it should be the city of New Orleans that has to fund that litigation if there's a fight," Giarrusso said during a budget committee meeting Thursday.
New Orleans City Attorney Donesia Turner said it would be the sheriff's office who must pay those bills.
