A new public opinion survey suggests New Orleans residents are feeling more optimistic about the city's future just six months into Mayor Helena Moreno's administration.
Greg Rigamer, president of BDPC LLC, says the survey of 400 live interviews found a dramatic shift in public sentiment. According to the poll, 56 percent of respondents believe New Orleans is headed in the right direction, while about 31 percent say it's on the wrong track.
Rigamer says that's a significant turnaround from previous surveys.
"I've been doing these polls for a good while," Rigamer said. "This is the first time that it's been in a positive vein."
The survey also found the mayor enjoys a favorability rating of nearly 79 percent, with almost half of respondents describing their opinion as "very favorable." Additionally, more than 71 percent said they believe the Moreno administration is doing an effective job.
Rigamer credits much of that support to the administration's communication and transparency.
"When people understand what's going on, they're more likely to listen," he said. "These numbers show people not only have expectations, but they believe the administration is getting results."
As for what's next, Rigamer says the advice is straightforward: keep doing what's working.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it," he said. "The public truly appreciates the effort and the results."
He says while challenges remain, the poll suggests many New Orleanians feel a renewed sense of confidence in the city's direction and its leadership.
