The New Orleans City Council Government Affairs Committee voted Wednesday to transfer parking enforcement and towing responsibilities to the New Orleans Police Department.
"I've been talking about this since last term," said New Orleans City Councilmember Lesli Harris. "We've had a lot of issues, everywhere, especially in the CBD where we can't get after-hours towing, where, for example, Chick-Fil-A, people are double parked and the poor parking enforcement folks are getting screamed at, cussed at."
Harris says giving NOPD direct control would help the parking enforcement staff with backup when motorists turn nasty.
If the full council approves, the effective date of the change would be May 31.
