Newell: Democrats aren't reading the room on immigration

WWL host Newell Normand took on the hot-button topic of immigration on his show, where he said the bill taking form in Washington right now on migrants is really problematic.

President Joe Biden said this weekend he would sign a bill if Congress would just send him one. The deal both sides are negotiating would give the U.S. a new emergency authority to shut down the border when it becomes overwhelmed with migrants.

Biden said he would use the authority the same day it's approved.

The emergency border shut down would kick in when 5,000 people a day cross the border -- a number so huge that Normand says it proves Biden doesn't really want to do anything.

"How crazy is this? Do they think we're not watching, that we're not listening, that we're not clued in? The one that's not reading the room is him (Biden)," Normand said, adding that the border becomes overwhelmed when the number hits 1,000 crossers, not 5,000.

The AP reported that Biden said at a political event in South Carolina that he would shut down the border ’“right now” if Congress passed the proposed deal.

“A bipartisan bill would be good for America and help fix our broken immigration system and allow speedy access for those who deserve to be here, and Congress needs to get it done,” Biden said. “It’ll also give me as president, the emergency authority to shut down the border until it could get back under control. If that bill were the law today, I’d shut down the border right now and fix it quickly."

What else is in the bill? "I can't wait to see," Normand said, adding that he bets it includes a huge amnesty umbrella for those who already came in illegally.

And a new bill isn't even necessary Normand said, because all Biden has to do is to enforce the current laws on the books at the border. This bill is all about political posturing, he added.

"In the end, you're the one that's paying the ticket," he said.
