New Orleans Police officials say a fatal crash in Treme Saturday morning happened as two vehicles were racing each other.
The wreck happened shortly after 1:30 a.m. near the I-10 on-ramp at N. Claiborne Ave. and St. Philip St.
"Through initial investigation, traffic fatality investigators determined that two vehicles were allegedly racing each other on North Claiborne Avenue headed East bound when one of the vehicles failed to negotiate a turn near St. Phillip Street," said police.
"When the driver missed the turn, the vehicle struck a guardrail causing it to overturn and land on a tree," police continued.
A 24-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.
A second person, a 23-year-old woman, was taken to the hospital. Police did not know the extent of her injuries.
Police said the other vehicle was not involved in the crash and its occupants did not report any injuries.
