$281,000: That's how much money the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office may have overpaid to deputies who worked Mardi Gras details this past year.
That was among the finding in a new New Orleans Inspector General report released on Wednesday.
According to inspector general Ed Michel's report, the OPSO failed to maintain proper documents for those details, including required documentation "for the majority of off-duty details" and authorization forms for deputies who worked more than 15 consecutive hours. Michel also found that deputies who were on leave worked those details without proper written permission.
The OPSO responded to the report by saying that it is working to resolve these problems through web-based automation and new leadership in the off-duty detail department.
