The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office says it is dealing with a ransomware attack, but computers used in the jail are not affected.

According to the statement from the sheriff's office, the cyber attack began around 4:30 a.m., but the trouble did not become apparent until around 8:00 a.m., when employees started having trouble with their computers.

The sheriff's office says the jail's computers are on a server separate from the one infected with the virus and they continue to function normally.

The sheriff's office says its IT staff is working to restore their systems, secure the network, and identify the origin of the ransomware.
