Louisiana State Police today released more information about last night's Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office shooting that left a man dead.
"Deputies responded to a call for service at a residence in the 14000 block of Madison Lane. While attempting to serve an Order of Protective Custody, deputies made contact with 20-year-old Warren Burton of Ponchatoula," Trooper William Huggins said in a news release.
He ways that during the encounter, Burton armed himself with a gun.
"While negotiating with Burton to disarm himself, he pointed the firearm toward the deputies. One deputy discharged their duty weapon, striking Burton. As a result, Burton was pronounced deceased on the scene."
No one else was injured.
We don't know why Burton was ordered to be taken into custody.
State law says, "Any parish coroner or judge of a court of competent jurisdiction may order a person to be taken into protective custody and transported to a treatment facility or the office of the coroner for immediate examination."
Typically such an order is issued when a family member reports an individual is a danger to themselves or others.
