Report: Gretna cops shoot at suspect who tried to run over them

GPD
Gretna Police Department

A suspect who allegedly tried to run over two Gretna police officers leading to them to shoot at him is now in custody.

According to our partners at NOLA.com, the incident happened around 2:30 p.m. when officers spotted a car with a fake temporary tag. Police say when the officer tried to pull the car over, the driver took off, eventually turning onto a dead-end street, Friedrichs Street. That’s when, according to officers, the man drove toward an officer who had stepped out of his unit and rammed the police car. The suspect, police say, then rammed a second unit that was trying to block him.

Investigators say the two officers fired shots at the suspect but missed. The suspect then lost control of his car near Stumpf Boulevard and crashed into a parked car. Officers arrested him after a canine officer found him hiding in a lot near a nearby Waffle House restaurant.

The case remains under investigation.
