A Slidell doctor has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison for conspiring to sell opioids and for defrauding health care benefit programs to the tune of $5.4 million.
A federal jury convicted Adrian Dexter Talbot last July on multiple drug counts and one count of conspiracy to commit drug fraud. On Wednesday, a federal judge sentenced Talbot to 87 months in prison.
Federal prosecutors proved to the jury that Dr. Talbot, through his clinic, Medical Clinical Consultants, accepted cash from people who wanted pills, ignoring signs that those people abusing those drugs. Prosecutors also demonstrated that Talbot pre-signed prescription for opioids and other controlled substances to be given to patients he never saw. The jury also found Talbot guilty of trying to cover up evidence of the scheme and of directing his patients to use their insurance benefits to fill their prescription.
No word on when Talbot will being his prison sentence.
