Authorities say mosquito samples from Destrehan have tested positive for West Nile Encephalitis.
"The Louisiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory has confirmed a positive mosquito sample," St. Charles Parish said in a news release.
Crews are looking for the source of the infected insects.
"VDCI personnel will inspect the immediate area, increase sampling, enhance surveillance and spray," officials advised. "Elevated mosquito abatement operations will continue until mosquito numbers fall below established threshold levels."
Meanwhile they advise people in the area to do what they can to avoid getting bitten by bugs carrying the virus.
"Residents can take actions to protect themselves from bites, such as avoiding being outside at dawn and dusk, wearing pants and long sleeves, and using insect repellant containing DEET. To eradicate mosquito breeding sites, dump any standing water around your home."
There are no reports of any humans contract the brain-swelling disease at this time.
