A suspect is dead after an encounter with the Jefferson Parish SWAT team Tuesday.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto said U.S. Marshals were serving a warrant in Marrero on a man wanted for a variety of charges in New Orleans.
The sheriff said when the task force arrived in the 5500 block of Hamerick Drive in Marrero around 7:30 a.m., the man barricaded himself inside a house and refused to surrender.
Lopinto said the suspect told negotiators he was either going to kill himself, or force cops to do it. Attempts to talk him down went on for hours into the early afternoon.
"Finally, the suspect ended up coming out of the house with the firearm itself. When he was raising that firearm, at least two of my deputies fired shots during that period of time, ending his life at this location."
Sheriff Lopinto said the coroner's office will release the suspect's identity. The case remains under investigation.
