Tangipahoa Sheriff's Office: Teacher implicated in relationship with student resigns

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office confirms it is investigating a report that a 17-year-old student got a teacher pregnant.

Due to the nature of the allegations and the alleged involvement of a juvenile, the sheriff's office says it is withholding further details, but did say the teacher in question recently resigned.

"While we cannot share specific details regarding the investigation, we can confirm that the allegations were dealt with promptly, and the investigation process has been rigorous and thorough," said Sheriff Daniel Edwards. "This type of investigation is time-consuming and is being handled with great care. Under no circumstances will we be rushed for closure."

While 17 is the legal age of consent in Louisiana, sexual relations between students and teachers are prohibited by law, no matter the age of the student.

Sheriff Edwards cautioned against the spread of false information or rumors, primarily through social media outlets.

"Doing so could detrimentally affect those involved and the outcome of the investigation," the sheriff's office said.
