“Our problem in Louisiana is our statutes don’t clearly define when a claim starts,” State Rep. Kirk Talbot (R-10) told WWL’s Newell Normand this week.
That’s just one of the insurance-related issues he hopes to improve with recent state laws. He joined Normand’s show to discuss this legislation from the past session.
“The most important thing, I think, was we got $30 million put into the fortified grant program for fortified roofs… up to a $10,000 grant that a homeowner can get to put a fortified roof on their home.”
These roofs have features such as strong edges, sealant and impact-resistant shingles that help protect them from weather damage. Talbot said that another bill from the past session mandated that insurance companies put discounts in for policyholders with fortified roofs.
“I would highly recommend it just because of how much, you know, it’s going to save you on your own, your homeowner’s premium, and how attractive you are going to become to insurance companies,” he explained. “They want to insure people with fortified roofs.”
While these developments should help property owners, Talbot said there are still some issues with insurance to work on in the state.
“We also don’t define when [a company] is acting in bad faith,” he said.
