Students and faculty at the University of New Orleans will receive an unexpected day off Monday after university administrators canceled classes and ordered the campus closed amid a possible threat made towards the campus.

UNO President John Nicklow announced the closure Sunday night, two days after that possible threat against the university was made.

“UNO’s Department of Public Security has been conducting an investigation throughout the weekend in collaboration with its law enforcement partners,” Nicklow said in a statement. “While we believe that there is still no imminent threat to campus, I have made the decision to cancel all classes tomorrow (Monday, November 21) out of an abundance of caution. The campus will be closed, and only essential personnel should report to work. All campus events are canceled. “

Nicklow said he will provide another update, including details about the status of Tuesday’s classes, soon. However, Nicklow said he could not provide any details about the threat because of the ongoing investigation.

“The safety and security of our faculty, staff and students are my top priority, and that will not be compromised,” Nicklow said.  “Once again, if you see or hear anything suspicious on campus, please call UNO’s Department of Public Safety at 504-280-6666 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.“
