The New Orleans Police Department says a dump truck drove off I-10 near the Esplanade Ave. exit. Its driver and a passenger are in stable condition at University Medical Center.
Police say the driver was trying to avoid another wreck on the highway.
"We know the driver of the truck swerved to avoid an accident on the overpass," said Kendrick Allen with NOPD. "Taking that defensive tactic, he came over the edge of the overpass, landing on Claiborne."
The dump truck landed on a car at street level, but police said that car was unoccupied.
N. Claiborne Ave. is closed at Columbus Street, and traffic is also crawling by on I-10.
NOPD advises motorists in the area to take alternate routes.
