New Orleans Fire Department responded to a two alarm blaze at a vacant building in Algiers this afternoon.

The fire burned at an abandoned two story duplex at an apartment complex on Southlawn Boulevard off General Meyer Avenue.

With the blaze working in the attic of the building a second alarm was called in by NOFD minutes after arriving just after 2pm.

Firefighters made an interior attack searching for anyone that may have been trapped.

Both apartments had been vacant since hurricane Ida and there was no electricity on in either apartment.

Firefighters made another search for any homeless person that may have been in the building but didn’t find anyone.

The fire started on the second floor between both apartments.

Both apartments sustained heavy fire, smoke and water damage.

The fire was placed under control at 2:54 pm.

The New Orleans Emergency Medical Services (NOEMS), the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) and Entergy responded to assist the NOFD with this incident.

Sixteen NOFD units carrying forty-four Fire Operations personnel were used in fighting the fire.

The case of the fire remains under investigation.
