Two teenagers died when their vehicle veered off the highway and crashed into Bayou Manchac in Ascension Parish.
According to Louisiana State Police, the crash happened shortly noon on Sunday on LA 427.
The crash claimed the lives of 16-year-old Caroline Smith and 16-year-old Chloe Hamilton of Prairieville.
LSP investigators says for reasons still being investigated, Smith failed to negotiate a right-hand curve and their 2008 Chevy Impala exited the roadway, and struck a tree. The impact with the tree was so forceful that the vehicle vaulted into a privately-owned pond and sank below the surface.
Smith and Hamilton were both pronounced deceased on the scene by first responders. It is unclear whether seatbelt use is a factor in the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
