You’ve heard the basics of the story countless times: Furry friend goes viral on social media.

However the twist that made Neuty’s tale truly attention-grabbing was that he wasn’t a cat or a dog. Neuty was the nutria who had been taken in by a Jefferson Parish family.

But Neuty’s fame became a double-edged sword when the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) got wind of the video and stepped in to confiscate the animal, citing the family for possession of a wild animal.

And yet, it appears the tale will get a feel-good ending after all. On Friday, the state announced Neuty could be going home.

The LDWF is allowing the family to apply for a permit to keep their beloved pet.

“I think this is a good conclusion for all sides,” LDWF Secretary Jack Montoucet said, according to WWL-TV
