Starting in the 2024-25 school year, the University of New Orleans will field a men’s amateur wrestling team, according to school officials.

The club wrestling team will operate under UNO Athletics in conjunction with the school’s Recreation and Intramurals department.

The team will fall under the same umbrella as other club sports at the school, including bowling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, rugby and soccer.

UNO’s wrestlers will compete against other regional opponents like Louisiana Tech, McNeese State, Xavier and LSU.

“Getting college club wrestling into metro New Orleans will really help grow the sport of wrestling in the region, which is so important to me because it taught me the values of hard work, accountability and leadership,” said Privateers alum Timmy Couvillion, according to WWL-TV. “I applaud my alma mater, the University of New Orleans, for taking on this endeavor.”

A large donation by Couvillion helped to create the club wrestling program.

UNO will hire a head wrestling coach this spring, and they will begin competition in the fall 2024 semester.
