A vote tonight of the Jefferson Parish School Board could have broad impact as members consider a plan to close or consolidate several schools.
The plan to close schools and move students to other campuses is in part due to old buildings that are expensive to repair, and a shortage of teachers, said Jefferson Parish School Board President Ralph Brandt.
"It's going to bring certified teachers into the classroom where we don't have them," he told Tommy Tucker on WWL First News. "This, you know, gives us stability in the schools where they have a stable, certified teaching base to teach all the children."
The plan will also have more students learning in newer facilities, said Brandt.
"When we consolidate, it will give us the opportunity to bring these schools into the 21st century," he said.
Brandt is not sure if the vote will pass. The board meets at their administrative building in Harvey this evening at six o'clock.
